The Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 2002, and it is full-fledged with state-of-the-art teaching & laboratory facilities. The NBA-AICTE accredited the department and VTU, Belgaum recognized department as a research center and had received permanent affiliation. The department has experienced and learned faculties and engaged in research activities on Aeroallergens, Bacteriophages, Bio-pollution, Bio-fuels, Phyto-chemical Studies, Tissue culture, fermentation technology, etc. Currently there are 7 research projects ongoing funded by DBT, DST, Govt. of India, AICTE, ICMR, New Delhi, KSCST, VGST, Govt. of Karnataka. The students of Biotechnology Department have bagged ranks from Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum. The department also organized seven National Conferences, one International Conference, FDP's, Six Environment Awareness workshops.

Classroom
The department has well furnished classrooms and seminar rooms to facilitate learning, discussions and outcome oriented learning. The specially designed classrooms are equipped with LCD projector & offer internet connectivity to enhance the learning process. It is used for conducting classes, presentations & webinars. The classrooms provide a very conducive environment for effective learning and objective is to provide students a hands-on experience and the right ambiance to stimulate learning. Spacious seminar hall is equipped with LCD projector and internet connectivity. The room can comfortably seat 110 people and is used for conducting classes, seminars and distinguished lectures.
Department Library
The library serves as a central organ of academic activity in the Department. The Department has a rich & vast collection of around 500 books, covering all disciplines of science, engineering, technology, humanities & social sciences. It also has one copy each of all BE projects, Seminar reports and Ph.D. dissertations carried out in the department in recent years. All these cater to the needs of students and faculty. The library serves to provide a calm and cosy ambience conductive to long hours of study. The library opens on all working days of the Institute from 8 AM to 5 PM.

Dr. Ashish A Prabhu
Assistant Professor,Department of Biotechnology National Institute of Technology, Warangal , Telangana, India
Dr. Ashish Prabhu, an alumni of Dept. of Biotechnology, Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology, Davangere of the batch 2007-2011, Visvesvaraya Technological University and Masters degree in Industrial biotechnology from Manipal Institute of Technology, India. During his masters he worked on the project entitled “Bioprocessing of rice bran as a functional food ingredient” at Central Food Technological Research Institute Mysore, India. He secured top ranking in his post-graduation and bagged a gold medal. Besides, he also qualified GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering) with 91 Percentile in biotechnology division. Ashish obtained his PhD (Biochemical Engineering) in 2018 from the Department of biosciences and bioengineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati. His doctoral research primarily focused on engineering methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris and optimizes the process in shake flask as well as reactor scale to produce a high titer of human interferon gamma. Subsequently, he also worked on engineering of other GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) organisms such as Bacillus, K.lactis and E.coli for the production of therapeutic proteins/Enzymes. Post PhD he joined Tata Institute of Genetics and Society, Bangalore, India, where he worked on production of malarial antigen and Single chain antibody in E.coli and Insect cell lines. Later he joined as Research Fellow in Metabolic Engineering, Center for climate and environmental protection in Cranfield university, United Kingdom. Where he worked on engineering of oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica for the production of value added products such as xylitol and succinic acid using renewable carbon sources such as sugarcane bagasse hydrolysate and crude glycerol. Currently he is working as Assistant Professor in Department of Biotechnology, National Institute of Technology Warangal. Dr Ashish has specialization in bioprocess and metabolic engineering of microbial cell factories for the production of biological products at high titer in reactor scale. He is interested in developing second generation biorefinery by utilizing renewable sources. Currently his research focused on. Pathway manipulation of cell factories for sustainable growth and production on renewable carbon sources. Optimization of process parameters in bioreactor level for maximizing the productivity of platform chemical commodities. Developing the mathematical models to understand the genotype-phenotype relationship of cell factories. He has published 41 research articles in journals of international reputation and also has 7 book chapters.

Bioinformatics Scientist at the National Institutes of health
Amulya Shastry, is an alumni of Dept. of Biotechnology, Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology, Davangere of the batch 2011-2015. Amulya Shastry recently graduated from North-eastern University with a master’s degree in Bioinformatics.I am delighted to inform you that I have secured a position as a Bioinformatics Scientist at the National Institutes of health. I will be working for the microbiome core at the NIAID. I wanted to thank you and all the professors of the biotechnology department for the immense support and guidance. This would not have been possible without your constant effort towards the betterment of biotech department which gave me an opportunity to mend my skills.
Shaman S. Shetty
Captain, Indian Army
Captain Shaman S. Shetty is an alumni of Dept. of Biotechnology, Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology, Davangere of the batch 2012-2016. After successful completion of degree he appeared for UPSC examinations. Finally secured 33 AIR in NCC entry and got selected for training at Officers Training Academy, Chennai as an Indian army officer. On successful completion of training from OTA, Chennai he was commissioned in infantry as attachment in Counter Insurgency areas of Arunachal Pradesh. He was awarded G-O-C in C commendation card Eastern command for carrying out successful operations in the counter insurgency areas with all his men safe back to the HQ’s in the year 2018. Currently Captain Shaman S. Shetty is posted in Ladakh in High Altitude Areas.

Rao, Honorary Professor and Former President, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore at S.S Mallikarjuna Cultural Center, BIET on 6th March 2019. The occasion was graced by Dr. R.C.Verma, Former Vice Chancellor, Vikram University, Madhya Pradesh & President, Society of Cytologists and Geneticists, Dr. B.H.M Nijalingappa, Vice President SOCG, Bangalore, Dr. M.C Gayathri, Secretary, SOCG, Bangalore, Dr.B.S Prasad, Principal, SSIMS&RC, Prof. Y .Vrushabhendrappa, Director, BIET, Dr. H.B Aravinda, Principal, BIET. On the second day of the programme, along with technical sessions and oral/poster presentations, a special public talk was arranged in the evening at 6:30 PM and was delivered by H. Ramakrishnaiah, Ph D., ARPS (Royal Society, London), EFIAP (France) a renowned & International Award Winning Photographer on “Wild Encounters – Art & Beyond”. On day three, as a part of the event BIOMARCH, a jatha was organized to sensitize the public to create awareness on “Biotechnology for sustainability in agriculture, Health, Environment” at 6 AM. |

- The Department of Biotechnology organized a one-day Lecture Programme on “Strides in Biotechnology” for the students on 19th February 2018. - Dr. Amitha Rani, Senior Scientist, NAL, Bangalore delivered a talk on Biomimics during 7th Nov – 8th Nov, 2022.
- NBA Expert team had visited the Biotechnology dept. on 2nd June to 4th June 2023.
- Skill development program - English communication is been arranged for 3rd sem students of Biotechnology, Chemical , Mechanical & Textile Engineering departments. The event is arranged from 22nd Jan 2024 to 26th Jan 2024 at Biotechnology seminar hall. The resourse person for this skill development program is Mr. Rama Harave & Ms. Thejaswini Saravanan from www.tigerwalks.in
